  3. 1. weight loss is all about calories in vs calories out (burned), theres no fad diet that works better than another; atkin's, south beach, etc.. are all geared more towards the company making money than really helping you out, sure they all can work because they're all based off the same principle but you dont need to go seeking some "magic" diet plan; the best diet is one you plan for yourself, all it takes is a bit of basic understanding of nutrients and how weight loss works, a good starting place would be here and the site bodybuilding.com has a wealth of information too

Another great way is to join a work out/fat loss forum or online community, you'll get the info, support and help you need

Your first step should be reworking your diet, diet is like 90% of weight loss, then excersise, learn the basics of nutrients and how to set up your own diet and just stick it and youll reach your goal before you know it!

  18. Hi. The problem with weight loss is that you get the gain gradually, most times, and that this is a simple equation:

    (energy in) – (energy out) = (net gain)

    where "energy in" is energy you take in, generally from food and beverages; "energy out" is the energy used, either expended usefully (as in thinking, walking, exercising, etc.) or lost as heat (energy goes to trying to keep your internal temp about 37C = 98.6F!)…

    So if you take in MORE energy than you use, you have a net gain…and THIS gets translated into fat, etc. If you take in LESS energy than you use, you have a NEG "net gain", which is a POS net LOSS…and this means that you can use up stored energy reserves.

    A major problem that people often face is that they attempt to cure a weight issue with only tackling ONE of the 2 factors in the above equation: either eating a bit less (i.e., reducing intake) or exercising a bit more (i.e., increasing activity = inc. energy usage). The problem is partly that the amount you generally need to trim is substantial enough that denying yourself the food will leave you feeling hungry, and trying to work out enough might kill you if you are out of shape!

    Another factor is that your body has its own way of reacting to changes; I have read that, if you try starving yourself, you can actually make the problem WORSE because the body will say, "Uh oh! Food is SCARCE!" and so it will tend to store MORE when you DO eat!

    Further, you can help to "stoke the furnace" via various means; it has been noted that eating a breakfast helps to increase your metabolism rate for that day–so skipping breakfast to "help your dieting" is NOT the thing to do! Another thing you may have noticed is that guys in cross-country running (for instance) often get lean and can eat anything and burn it all up…so LOTS of exercise also affects things.

    So there are some things to keep in mind:

    1) do BOTH: eat "right"/"sensibly" AND exercise right/sensibly…

    2) don't skip breakfast

    3) If you are hungry, eat. But don't eat if you are NOT. If food is used to comfort you, then you'll know if you keep asking yourself, "Am I REALLY hungry? Or do I just have the munchies?" This can work!

    4) Develop a food strategy:

    a) Use substitution to help keep you full. Instead of sugared/sweetened foods, eat more fruits (and nuts). Instead of pop or other drinks, use water. Have soup instead of the greasy burger–you'll feel full and have a lot fewer calories, generally.

    b) Avoid obviously-bad choices. Deep-fried foods, greasy foods, fatty foods all come to mind. If you do any cooking at all, you can see that fish and poultry are a LOT less fatty than beef or pork…do those substitutions, too! Avoid fries, etc.

    c) Increase your intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, if possible. Lots of diets are lacking in these and you can be missing whatever amounts of trace elements YOUR personal biochemistry requires for the proper functioning.

    d) STAY HYDRATED. Models do this partially to keep from eating, partially to keep their skin nice; it also helps things to work better, avoids at least some headaches, etc. So why not do this? In fact, why not give up pop for water?

    Just some tips…there are tons of others. Most "diets" don't work because you need to change the lifestyle that got you heavy, not just turn on/off a switch for a few weeks or days.

  22. You know, not everyone thinks like you – not everyone thinks to make fun of heavy people working out. People are all there for the same thing! I doubt you would be the only heavy person. Everyones trying to be healthy, lose weight & be fit. You've really got to stop caring what people think and start caring what you think.

    Jumping rope is great – especially in the morning where it kick starts the metabolism. Which brings me to my point, I find that when I work out in the morning or even do something like 100 jumping jacks, 4 sets of 12 lunges, running on the spot, 12 pushups, 50 crunches (ok, it seems like quite a bit when it's written..) I feel so much better + motivated throughout the day to workout more and eat healthier. I love to sweat too, and workout & feel the burn! It's great. And how good do you feel after a great workout? Try and keep that feeling. That's what keeps me going. (and also the fact that i'm losing weight, getting fitter & it keeps my skin clear & healthy.. lol)

    Good songs always get me pumped too. And a goal. I set a goal of losing 2-3 pounds a week. Try to stay away from really heavy foods.. like processed, crappy, fattening foods. Eat light! Tuna salads, chicken salads, lean meats, yogurt, soy, fish.. It doesn't make you feel all lazy & unmotivated. You really have to make it a lifestyle change. Be constant, and build up to things. Don't just take 2 hour run then eat a bag of chips that night. Instead, start with a 15 minute jog, then do some skipping, jumping jacks, running on the spot, lunges, squats, light weights. Mix it up. You might also want to join a sport, or dance, or activity. I know I love rock climbing and mountain hiking. Don't forget to drink around 10 glasses of water a day. I always have a bottle of cold water with me, especially whenever I feel like snacking on chocolate or something!

  29. Hi Allison. I was going through the WFF Stillwater forum today and hadn't seen your name in awhile and decided to pay a visit to your blog. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family during an extremely tough time.

    This is a response to the comment above on weight/fat loss. I have been on a simple fitness and nutrition program by Kinetix, based out of Seattle for almost 15 months year now.

    After 16 weeks I had lost 40 lbs and gone from 30% to 20% body fat. After another 8 weeks I have lost and kept off a total of 50 lbs and fluctuate between 16% and 17% body fat.

    The basic fitness program that is so successful for reducing fat is 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week. You alternate days lifting dumbells that builds lean body mass that burns fat, with cardio. It is critical during the cardio workouts to stay within the fat burning (65% of max) heart range. It may seem like a joke because cardio at that level may have one barely breathing hard. But at a higher heart rate the body can't burn fat fast enough so it burns lean body mass; exactly the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish.

    The key to Kinetix nutrition is teaching clients how to create balanced home-cooked meals with 40% Protein, 40% Carbs, and 20% fat, that is critical to building lean body mass.     This is an excellant routine to follow as it keeps your body in a high rate of fat burning. The diet area needs not be ignored. As the saying goes you are what you eat. So constantly put good in and you will get good out. Try not to eat at least 3 hours before going to bed and make your last meal heavy on the protein side. Because when you sleep your body will be burning fuel ie carbs and once it is done burning up the carbs it will look for stored fat to burn as fuel.
