    Hi Austin,

    Congrats on week 13! You are right there, and it sounds like you got about the same results as I did for round one: down 20 pounds.

    I tried easing into running, stretching, and doing hip strengthening exercises, but my IT band issues did not go away. I would like to come back to running later, but I didn't want to risk any injuries before Insanity. My days of running have been put on hold. But, I lost another 20 lbs. during round two, and I am ready to shred that last bit of fat and get ripped. Insanity is perfect for this. I might rotate P90X/Insanity or go on a hybrid schedule afterwards.

    For you, I would recommend jumping right into Insanity! It will burn fat quickly and is the fastest route from point a to b. Plus, P90X gets really boring around day 150, and adding running extends your workouts up to 2 hours per day. Why do that, when you can fit Insanity into your schedule at 45 minutes a day? You will also stay motivated with a new program. Go for Insanity man, you won't regret it.

  8. Hi. The problem with weight loss is that you get the gain gradually, most times, and that this is a simple equation:

    (energy in) – (energy out) = (net gain)

    where "energy in" is energy you take in, generally from food and beverages; "energy out" is the energy used, either expended usefully (as in thinking, walking, exercising, etc.) or lost as heat (energy goes to trying to keep your internal temp about 37C = 98.6F!)…

    So if you take in MORE energy than you use, you have a net gain…and THIS gets translated into fat, etc. If you take in LESS energy than you use, you have a NEG "net gain", which is a POS net LOSS…and this means that you can use up stored energy reserves.

    A major problem that people often face is that they attempt to cure a weight issue with only tackling ONE of the 2 factors in the above equation: either eating a bit less (i.e., reducing intake) or exercising a bit more (i.e., increasing activity = inc. energy usage). The problem is partly that the amount you generally need to trim is substantial enough that denying yourself the food will leave you feeling hungry, and trying to work out enough might kill you if you are out of shape!

    Another factor is that your body has its own way of reacting to changes; I have read that, if you try starving yourself, you can actually make the problem WORSE because the body will say, "Uh oh! Food is SCARCE!" and so it will tend to store MORE when you DO eat!

    Further, you can help to "stoke the furnace" via various means; it has been noted that eating a breakfast helps to increase your metabolism rate for that day–so skipping breakfast to "help your dieting" is NOT the thing to do! Another thing you may have noticed is that guys in cross-country running (for instance) often get lean and can eat anything and burn it all up…so LOTS of exercise also affects things.

    So there are some things to keep in mind:

    1) do BOTH: eat "right"/"sensibly" AND exercise right/sensibly…

    2) don't skip breakfast

    3) If you are hungry, eat. But don't eat if you are NOT. If food is used to comfort you, then you'll know if you keep asking yourself, "Am I REALLY hungry? Or do I just have the munchies?" This can work!

    4) Develop a food strategy:

    a) Use substitution to help keep you full. Instead of sugared/sweetened foods, eat more fruits (and nuts). Instead of pop or other drinks, use water. Have soup instead of the greasy burger–you'll feel full and have a lot fewer calories, generally.

    b) Avoid obviously-bad choices. Deep-fried foods, greasy foods, fatty foods all come to mind. If you do any cooking at all, you can see that fish and poultry are a LOT less fatty than beef or pork…do those substitutions, too! Avoid fries, etc.

    c) Increase your intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, if possible. Lots of diets are lacking in these and you can be missing whatever amounts of trace elements YOUR personal biochemistry requires for the proper functioning.

    d) STAY HYDRATED. Models do this partially to keep from eating, partially to keep their skin nice; it also helps things to work better, avoids at least some headaches, etc. So why not do this? In fact, why not give up pop for water?

    Just some tips…there are tons of others. Most "diets" don't work because you need to change the lifestyle that got you heavy, not just turn on/off a switch for a few weeks or days.

  10. If you say you don't eat any junk food, then your diet obviously isn't the problem. Just stay clear of white, starchy carbs like white bread, pastry and pasta, and opt for foods with complex carbohydrates, like brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, oats, etc.
    You say you want to get toned. Toning the body is essentially lessening the body fat so that your muscles are more visible. There is a popular misconception, for example, that if you exercise a particular part of your body, you'll lose fat from there. This is simply untrue.
    When you're doing cardio, if you want to burn more fat, try interval training. This is where you do one minute very intense, followed by a very steady, slow minute, and the same again. You'll burn more fat this way, thus making your body more 'toned'.

    Here's something I taped to my mirror the other day, and I think it applies across the board – to anyone who feels that the spandex is less than flattering. Granted, I don't know what it's like to be your weight (or your height for that matter.), but everyone is unhappy with their body. Here is my motivation. Maybe it can be yours too.

    ******DAILY MOTIVATION******

    Passion – This is wear it all starts. Set your goals from your heart. Forget about what the statistics say and any of your past failures. What does your dream body look like? How bad do you want it? Why do you want it so bad? How is your life going to change once you achieve it? Think of how much passion will come into your life once you are lean, healthy and sexy in your own mind when you look in a mirror.

    Growth – Achieving your goal does not have to happen over night. Small changes add up very quickly. A great strategy is to simply be better today then you were yesterday and better tomorrow than you are today. After 6 months you will be blown away with the improvements that you’ve made.

    Comfort Zone – In order to experience this daily growth there are times when you will have to step outside of your comfort zone. You will have to increase the intensity of your workouts, prepare food in advance, write down your goals, spend some time visualizing, pass on the dessert, and other things that have not become a habit for you just yet. Accept discomfort and expect it. It’s an opportunity for you to become better than you are today.

    Gratitude – It’s easy to be grateful when things are going well, but I find the practice of being grateful for who you are today and for the so called failures and challenges of your past is much more powerful. Each challenge or failure provides you with the opportunity to grow and improve yourself. If you want to be happy in your body start today! Love yourself unconditionally. Be grateful for all your past experiences because they have contributed to the lean, sexy and healthy person you will become.

    Become – This could very well be the most powerful word in your vocabulary when you use it properly. For example; “I have BECOME UNSTOPPABLE!” “I have become Mary, the lean healthy and sexy woman who loves healthy foods and living the active lifestyle.”
    When you ‘become’ something or someone it is no longer a hope or dream. It’s a part of who you are. You now hold these beliefs and attitudes that nothing will get in your way.

    I knew that I will become ‘Unstoppable’ when the alarm clock will go off at 5:00am so I can go for my morning walk, and it will no longer be about fat loss. I will be doing it because I love it.
    It will provide me with an opportunity to clear my head, plan out my day, enjoy the sounds of the birds chirping, listen to an educational audio on my Mp3 player, and more than anything it will energize me first thing in the morning when I would typically be tired.

    Fun – Research shows that the people who choose activities that they enjoy are more likely to stick to their programs for the long term. You may read a book that lays out the best fat burning workout routine and nutrition program, but if you don’t enjoy it chances are you will not stick with it.
    There are so many different workout programs on the market. Experiment with them and find the ones that fit best with your lifestyle and the ones that you enjoy the most. Don’t just stick with one. You need variety and variety will keep the enjoyment of activity at a high level.

    Role Model – You need new references, which demonstrate that achieving your dream body will happen. Seek out that 5% of the population and model their behaviors and actions. If someone tells you that your fat loss goals are unrealistic just show them a picture of your role models.

    Personally, I enjoy the treadmill. Walk at an incline or use one of the programs, particulary the hills. Those programs burn loads of calories. Try 45-60 five or six days a week for maximum results.

    The elliptical trainer is also a good option.

    As far as diet, well I can't help you there, lol.
